The 5 All Time Best Ski Towns In Utah

Utah is one of my favorite places to ski! I visit pretty often because of the variety of awesome ski towns and their convenient proximity to major airports, making it easy to fly in and start exploring. 

If you want to discover the top ski towns in Utah, I’ve put together a curated list just for you.

1. Park City

Without a doubt, the quintessential ski town that immediately comes to mind is Park City, home to Utah’s largest ski resort. Park City truly embodies the classic ski town experience: nestled at the foot of the mountains, it boasts stunning slope views, abundant après-ski options, and a wealth of ski-in/ski-out accommodations.

That said, remember that being a traditional ski town often means higher prices, as visitors are willing to pay for both the convenience and the whole ski-town experience.

One of my favorite things about Park City, though, is its expansive size, which has led to two distinct base areas, Park City Mountain Village and Canyons Village, that feel like two separate towns. Each area is packed with restaurants, hotels, shops, and more. What’s great about having two base areas is the variety and the ability to spread out the crowds, giving visitors two excellent options.

Overall, Park City stands out as Utah’s top traditional ski town. Its size, amenities, fantastic skiing, and proximity to Salt Lake City International Airport make it hard to beat.

2. Salt Lake City

Next on the list is Salt Lake City. For those unfamiliar with SLC, one of its best features is the easy access to nearby ski resorts; many are within an hour of downtown. This convenience leads most visitors to stay in the city rather than in the valley where the resorts are located. Staying in SLC also tends to be cheaper because there are more choices for hotels, AirBnbs, and so on.

Personally, I always stay in Salt Lake City when visiting resorts like Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and Brighton. It’s a short drive to these spots, and SLC itself is full of restaurants, shops, bars, and efficient public transportation. Plus, it’s close to the airport, making travel a breeze.

While Salt Lake City might not seem like a traditional “ski town,” it certainly has that vibe. SLC is a perfect choice for those seeking more of a city atmosphere than a typical ski village.

And if you haven’t yet experienced Salt Lake City, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its proximity to the mountains, the stunning views, and the welcoming locals. It’s my top pick for a Utah ski town.

3. Brian Head

Brian Head is a fantastic choice for a more laid-back and family-friendly ski destination. Known for its high elevation—around 9,800 feet—it’s one of the highest ski resorts in Utah, which means it consistently has great snow. 

Brian Head is ideal for skiers and snowboarders looking to escape the crowds of larger, big-name resorts. It offers an authentic mountain town vibe that’s both relaxed and welcoming. I had the pleasure of visiting Brian Head this past winter and was blown away by the incredible snow and few crowds. 

Another perk of visiting Brian Head is its prime location near Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, making it easy to ski and explore the area’s other parks.

Regarding the actual skiable terrain, Brian Head Resort is split between two interconnected mountains, offering a range of trails perfect for beginners to experts. And for non-skiers or families with young kids, the town has plenty of activities like snow tubing, snowmobiling, and scenic chairlift rides. 

Brian Head’s affordability also makes it a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers, with plenty of affordable lodging options close to the slopes.

Overall, Brian Head is a great pick if you’re looking for a laid-back mountain town with excellent snow, family-friendly amenities, and a true escape from the busier ski hubs.

4. Ogden

Ogden combines historic charm with quick access to some of Utah’s best skiing. About 30 minutes from Snowbasin, Powder Mountain, and Nordic Valley resorts, Ogden makes an excellent base for skiers exploring various terrain. This former railroad town has reinvented itself as a lively, artsy destination full of unique cafes, galleries, and shops along its historic 25th Street.

To add to its special ambiance, Ogden has a vibrant year-round community, so there’s always something happening, from local art exhibits to craft beer festivals. Its nightlife and dining scene have also become a real draw, with everything from casual pubs to upscale dining options.

Ogden’s blend of convenience, affordability, and character makes it a top pick for those who want a unique ski experience. If you’re after a ski town that offers both a taste of history and easy access to the slopes, Ogden should be high on your list, especially if you want to avoid the more popular and crowded areas like Park City and Salt Lake City.

5. Heber Valley

Just about 20 minutes from Park City and close to both Deer Valley and Sundance Resort, Heber Valley is an excellent option for skiers looking for a peaceful, scenic escape with easy access to world-class skiing. This charming valley is surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains, offering stunning views and a quieter atmosphere compared to bustling ski towns.

Heber Valley has something for everyone, from the relaxing Homestead Crater, a geothermal hot spring popular for post-ski soaks, to the famous Heber Valley Railroad, where you can enjoy a scenic ride through the snow-covered landscapes. The area also has cozy lodges, farm-to-table dining, and several breweries, creating a cozy après-ski vibe without the crowds.

With its peaceful setting, charming attractions, and proximity to some of Utah’s top ski resorts, Heber Valley offers a perfect mixture of outdoor adventure and relaxation that’s hard to find elsewhere.
