4 Ski Resorts For The Best Skiing In Connecticut

Connecticut may not be the first place that comes to mind for ski resorts, but it offers several options. While these resorts may not be the biggest or have the tallest vertical drops, they still provide good terrain for those looking to ski within the state without requiring long drives or flights. Keep reading as I highlight the best skiing in Connecticut.

1. Mohawk Mountain – Cornwall, Connecticut

Mohawk Mountain Ski Area is the biggest ski resort in Connecticut, with 112 skiable acres of terrain for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy. While this number isn’t massive by any means, it allows winter sports enthusiasts of all levels to enjoy a decent amount of terrain in Connecticut.

Although skiing is my favorite aspect of this mountain, the charming community around the resort comes in as a close second. The area may be small, but it boasts some fantastic local dining options and nearby hotels that are definitely worth exploring.

I recommend making your way to At The Corner, a cafe known for its craft beer and American cuisine. It’s a great experience for both Connecticut locals and visitors planning a trip to the northwestern part of the state.

2. Mount Southington – Plantsville, Connecticut

Mount Southington Ski Area is next on the list. With just 51 skiable acres, it’s the smallest resort in Connecticut, but don’t let that deter you, it’s a fantastic spot to visit.

Its central location makes it easily accessible for travelers from New Haven, Hartford, or nearby small towns, and the family-friendly atmosphere is exceptional. While it may not be the best choice for expert skiers looking for a challenge, it’s excellent for beginners and perfect for families with children.

What I love most about this resort is its nostalgic, old-school vibe, highlighted by adorable details like the original red barn that served as the first rental shop and cafeteria and the farmhouse that now functions as the office and ticket area. These farm-inspired details really add to the classic ski area ambiance.

Powder Ridge is another great ski resort in Connecticut. It offers over 80 acres of skiable terrain and an excellent ski and snowboarding school. Like many others in the area, it may not be a destination for a major ski trip, but it’s a fantastic option if you’re local or visiting and want to hit the slopes.

What I love most about Powder Ridge is its mountainside gazebos and day rooms. You can rent these spaces for the day, giving you a cozy base to retreat to between runs. It’s perfect for warming up, enjoying a meal, and relaxing without staying out in the cold all day. This unique setup is ideal for families or groups of friends and adds a fun, convenient touch to your ski day.

With 70 skiable acres, it offers a range of terrain for all skill levels, including 53% green, 23% blue, 18% black diamond, and 6% double black diamond runs.

What I love most about Ski Sundown is its dining and bar options. You can choose from Sunnyside Kitchen, The Back Kitchen, The Last Chair Bar, or the Sundown Grill, giving you plenty of great places to grab a bite or a drink while staying close to the slopes.
