The Best Time To Ski Lake Tahoe

The best time to ski in Lake Tahoe is from late February to early April. During this period, most runs are open, the base layer is excellent, and snowfall is at its peak.

To learn more about skiing at Lake Tahoe during each winter month, keep diving in below.

December

December marks the true beginning of ski season. While a few resorts may open as early as October and most by November, December allows for more substantial snowfall and gets everything into full swing.

Personally, December isn’t my top pick for skiing since not all runs may be open yet. However, it’s still a viable option if you’re eager to hit the slopes early.

If you do choose to ski in December, I recommend avoiding the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays due to the large influx of crowds heading to the slopes during those times.

January

January is a great time to ski at Lake Tahoe. Skiing during the New Year has a unique charm, with a friendly and uplifting atmosphere. The snow base deepens by this time, and snowstorms become more frequent. Most runs are usually open by January, although this can vary depending on the year and snowfall.

If you’re planning a January visit, it’s wise to avoid the New Year’s Day and MLK Day holidays, as these periods tend to attract large crowds due to school and work holidays.

February

February is one of my top choices for skiing and snowboarding in the United States. By this time, most resorts have been open for several months, nearly all runs are open, and frequent snowstorms are forecast.

While I usually advise avoiding holiday weekends, I understand the appeal of maximizing PTO days, and Presidents Day isn’t a bad time to hit the slopes. Expect long lift lines and some congestion on groomed runs and dining areas, but the conditions are usually fantastic, which makes up for some of the chaos!

March

If I had to choose the best month for skiing in Lake Tahoe, it would be March. This month typically sees the highest snowfall, resulting in incredible powder days. With numerous runs open, March is truly an ideal time to enjoy the mountains here.

April

April is when spring skiing truly excels and is another fantastic time to visit the slopes. Lake Tahoe is renowned for its excellent spring skiing conditions, allowing you to enjoy the slopes in slightly warmer weather with fewer layers.

However, April typically sees less snowfall so that you might encounter fewer powder days. For the best conditions, I recommend visiting early in the month.
