10 Snowy Places Like Banff That Are Great Alternatives

Banff National Park is one of the most stunning destinations I’ve ever visited. It’s like you are walking inside of a snow globe. Gigantic snow-covered mountains surround you; downtown, the streets are lit up with festive lights and decor, and the ski resorts are epic and picturesque. 

Having visited Banff myself, I realized instantly why so many people talk about and visit the park. There’s something special about the vibe and views, but as I was walking in the streets, I knew I had to explore more places like Banff, which got me thinking about similar destinations. 

If you are looking to explore places like Banff, continue reading below as I outline a handful of places in the United States and several others around the world that are great alternatives to Banff. 

1. Queenstown, New Zealand

When I think of Banff, I picture a relaxed atmosphere with cozy restaurants, stunning views, exciting outdoor activities, and an overall sense of peace. So it may seem surprising that I’m comparing this charming town to Queenstown, known as the world’s adventure capital.

However, these two destinations have a lot in common, from their boutique shops, inviting cafes, and restaurants to their wealth of outdoor adventures like hiking, skiing, and more, all surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes. Just remember, if you’re planning a trip to Queenstown for snow and skiing, visit between June and October, as it’s in the southern hemisphere!

2. Jackson Hole, Wyoming, United States

Jackson Hole is one of my all-time favorite destinations in the United States and the world. It has the same small-town feel as Banff, along with adorable hotels, quirky bars, fun restaurants, and, of course, outdoor activities. 

However, Jackson Hole and Banff really share similarities, in my eyes, in the skiing and the national parks. Jackson Hole has two ski resorts in town: Snow King Mountain and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Banff has three: Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Mt. Norquay. Both destinations offer many different skiing choices along with some terrific terrain. 

When it comes to national parks, Jackson Hole doesn’t sit within one, but it is just down the road from two beautiful ones: Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. So, you can expect plenty of great views and activities to enjoy, similar to Banff. 

3. Glacier National Park, Montana, United States

It makes sense that Glacier National Park shares many similarities with Banff National Park, as they aren’t too far away from each other! In fact, did you know they are just a four-hour drive apart? 

Aside from their close locations, their scenery is pretty similar. Both landscapes have epic mountains, snow-covered landscapes in the winter, alpine lakes, and beautiful views. 

With this scenery comes plenty of outdoor activities, including hiking and skiing. While Banff has three traditional ski resorts, Glacier skiers can enjoy cross-country skiing, but just a few miles down the road, you’ll find Whitefish, which offers some of the best skiing in the state! It’s an excellent alternative for those wanting somewhere similar to Banff with the views, activities, and towns, and they aren’t too far from one another, which is the icing on the cake. 

4. Telluride, Colorado, United States

Telluride is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been in Colorado. I had heard people talking about the mountain town for so long that I knew I had to check it out, and I am so glad that I did. From the moment you drive into town, your eyes are drawn to the massive mountains surrounding the area, which are very similar to Banff. 

Another similarity that the two share is the adorable downtown area. Both destinations have famous Main Streets full of local businesses, small boutiques, quaint cafes, and awesome bars. 

Last but certainly not least, Telluride is home to some of the most iconic skiing in the state of Colorado, and Banff is home to some of the most legendary skiing in Canada. Their similarities are genuinely amazing!

5. Canmore, Canada

When I think of Banff and Canmore, I see two neighboring towns with a lot in common yet distinct vibes. Banff has a lively, bustling atmosphere with plenty of restaurants and boutique shops and a renowned national park backdrop that attracts visitors worldwide. It’s a hub for adventure, with countless outdoor activities and postcard-worthy views at every turn.

Canmore, on the other hand, feels more laid-back and authentic. It’s a bit quieter, with a strong community feel, unique artisan shops, and a more relaxed pace. The town still offers stunning mountain scenery and outdoor experiences, like hiking, climbing, and skiing, but with fewer crowds than Banff.

Banff is the perfect choice if you’re seeking a lively, iconic mountain town. But for a more peaceful escape with the same spectacular surroundings, Canmore may be your perfect match and an alternative if you want to experience something new.

6. Aspen, Colorado, United States

You might be surprised to find Aspen on this list. The town is known for its ritz and glam, featuring 5-star hotels, designer shops like Prada and Chanel, and overall lavish celebrity appeal. While Banff has a few fancy hotels, it doesn’t really compare to Aspen when it comes to luxury. 

However, the two share similarities in their incredible mountain views, outdoor activities, and Main Street, which is super walkable and filled with things. If you are looking for a fancier version of Banff, I would recommend Aspen. 

7. Lake Tahoe, California, United States

Next up is my favorite place to visit in California, Lake Tahoe! It’s a great alternative to Banff if you are a visitor looking for a similar vibe, scenery, and activities but with a little more to do! 

In Tahoe, you can enjoy all the same winter activities like hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, and more. But you also have activities on the lake and the many casinos in the area. You’ll never run out of things to do in Lake Tahoe. 

Aside from that, you’ll also love the countless ski options. While Banff has ski resorts, Lake Tahoe has numerous to choose from! Some possibilities include Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly, Northstar, and Diamond Peak, and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of all the resorts in the area. Lake Tahoe is the perfect alternative to Banff if you are looking for a similar vibe and amenities but want more options. 

8. Whistler, Canada

Another great place like Banff is Whistler! When comparing Banff and Whistler, it’s like choosing between two legendary ski mountain destinations, each with its own unique charm.

Banff has that classic alpine feel, sitting within a national park with jaw-dropping scenery, turquoise lakes, and incredible wildlife. Its atmosphere feels cozy and laid-back, with charming streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants, and plenty of local character. Banff’s outdoor activities, from hiking to skiing, are world-class, and the stunning natural beauty is a big draw.

Whistler, by contrast, is a bit more modern and has a buzzing, energetic vibe. Known for its massive ski resort and year-round adventure options, Whistler is a paradise for thrill-seekers and is home to a vibrant apres-ski scene. It’s got a lively village with high-end restaurants, chic stores, and a nightlife that doesn’t quit.

Whistler is ideal for those seeking a nonstop experience with lots of action, while Banff offers a more serene, classic mountain retreat with gorgeous landscapes and a cozy, small-town feel.

9. Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt and Banff both offer breathtaking mountain landscapes that feel almost unreal, perfect for travelers who love the outdoors. Each town is set in a stunning landscape surrounded by mountains with impressive peaks and glacier-fed lakes, creating a picturesque setting for adventures year-round.

In winter, both are top ski spots with scenic slopes and snowy vistas, while in summer, they’re ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and incredible photo opportunities. 

Both towns have a warm, inviting atmosphere, with cozy chalets, boutique shops, and a lively après-ski scene, making the evenings just as enjoyable as the days exploring. Zermatt and Banff deliver unforgettable mountain experiences with a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. If you want a similar experience to Banff but want to head to the Swiss Alps, don’t hesitate to head to Zermatt.

10. Chamonix, France

Chamonix and Banff are both set in incredible mountain landscapes, making them perfect destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. In the winter, both towns offer fantastic skiing and snowboarding, while summer brings hiking and stunning views. 

Each town has a laid-back yet lively vibe, with cozy chalets, charming cafés, and plenty of places to unwind after a day of adventure. Whether you’re in the French Alps or the Canadian Rockies, Chamonix and Banff are all about epic experiences and beautiful scenery.
