Another tip is to prepare your own meals instead of dining out. Bringing a packed lunch or using a camping stove in the parking lot for slopeside snacks can help you cut down on dining expenses.
While Vail tends to be slightly more expensive, it does have a super unique option for saving money on dining. Vail has a fantastic spot at Belle’s Camp, at the top of Skyline Express, where you can grill out. You can bring foods like hot dogs and burgers to cook at the summit.
The staff at Vail typically have the grills hot and running for you, so all you have to do is bring your food! Just remember to arrive early, as the grills can’t be reserved, and you’ll likely need to share the grills with others who know about this insider tip.
It’s one of my favorite ways to save money while enjoying a fun cookout with family and friends, all without returning to the parking lot or dining at a restaurant.
2. Weather
Vail and Breckenridge are about 35 miles apart and generally experience similar weather patterns. Vail typically gets an annual average of 354 inches of snowfall, while Breck averages 355 inches. As you can see, the difference is minimal, with Breck receiving just about 1 inch more.
3. Food
The dining scene at Vail and Breckenridge is quite similar, offering great options for slopeside dining and restaurants off the slopes.
However, one notable difference is that Vail has more dining choices due to its larger size and skiable acres. This allows the crowds to spread across the resort, providing more restaurants and dining halls for people to enjoy.
Another unique feature of Vail is the availability of grills at Belle’s Camp. You can bring your own food and cook at the summit, which is a nice perk for those who prefer to prepare their own meals.
Head to the Red Lion without hesitation for a vibrant apres-ski experience in Vail! If you’re with family or craving a fantastic meal, visit the Westside Cafe & Market. They’re open from breakfast to dinner and are renowned for their delicious brunch, especially their excellent Bloody Mary and Eggs Benedict.
On the other hand, Breckenridge has more of a town feel than a ski village vibe, so its restaurants are more local. From my personal experience, Breckenridge’s dining options are slightly less expensive, but not by much.
If you’re seeking an apres-ski spot in Breck, I love the Tbar for its fantastic selection of beers. I’d suggest Downstairs at Eric’s for a family-friendly dining experience or a tasty meal. Their incredible pizza and beer are served in a lively atmosphere that caters to both adults and kids, with plenty of games to keep children entertained. For a more upscale option, consider dining at Blue River Bistro.
4. Accommodations
Accommodations like hotels, Airbnbs, and VRBOs are quite pricey whether you choose Vail or Breckenridge. However, if you’re aiming to save a bit, Breckenridge offers slightly more affordable options due to its town setup with various choices. Still, neither town can really be considered budget-friendly.
For top-notch accommodation in Vail, I suggest The Arrabelle at Vail Square. It’s within walking distance to the ski slopes and Vail Village and features beautiful rooms and luxurious amenities.
Marriott’s Mountain Valley Lodge at Breckenridge stands out as an excellent choice in Breck. It enjoys a fantastic location, complete with an impressive hot tub and pool area, and offers amazing rooms.
5. Accessibility
Both ski resorts are close to I-70 and just 35 miles apart. Vail is roughly 97 miles from Denver, while Breckenridge is about 80 miles away, making Breckenridge a bit easier and faster to reach.
6. Ski Slopes
Skiing at Vail and Breckenridge offers incredible experiences. While they receive similar amounts of snowfall, their terrains differ slightly.
Vail boasts a vast 5,317 skiable acres with 32 lifts catering to skiers and snowboarders. This terrain is divided into 18% for beginners, 29% for intermediates, and 53% for advanced levels. Additionally, Vail is home to the Legendary Back Bowls, 7 huge bowls that are fantastic to ski down!
On the other hand, Breckenridge features 2,908 skiable acres and 35 lifts. Its terrain comprises 11% for beginners, 31% for intermediates, 24% for advanced, and 34% for experts. In addition, Breck is home to the highest lift in North America, which makes for an epic experience!
They are quite similar in terms of numbers. However, the key difference lies in Vail’s larger skiable acres, which lead to less congestion on the slopes compared to certain areas in Breckenridge.
7. Ski Pass
The Epic Pass covers both ski resorts, making it easy for skiers to visit multiple places. Having both resorts accessible with the same pass adds to the convenience.
