December is the true peak of the holiday season and the start of prime skiing conditions at many resorts. With snow covering the slopes and festive vibes all around, there’s no better time to hit the mountains. 

As someone who loves to ski early in the season and is constantly checking to see how the ski conditions are, I know all about the best places to ski this December. Whether planning a holiday getaway or simply looking to carve some powder, here’s a guide to the best ski resorts to visit in December.

1. Mount Bachelor, Oregon

Mount Bachelor is one of my favorite ski resorts in the Pacific Northwest, and they’re off to a great start this season! Known for its stunning volcanic terrain and reliable snowfall, it offers incredible conditions for early-season skiing.ย 

This is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a mix of epic views and adventure. And there’s no better place to return to after a long day on the slopes than Bend!

2. Stevens Pass, Washington

Situated in the Cascade Mountains, Stevens Pass boasts a charming alpine vibe and impressive early-season snowfall. The resort opened a week earlier than expected this year because of the awesome snow it has already gotten! 

This is an excellent spot for intermediate and advanced skiers who want to take advantage of the Pacific Northwest’s snowy scenery.

3. The Summit at Snoqualmie, Washington

Just a short drive from Seattle, The Summit at Snoqualmie is a fantastic option for December skiing. This resort is especially popular with families and beginners. 

Its convenient location and accessible terrain make it an ideal getaway for those looking to ease into the season.

4. Alyeska Resort, Alaska

Alyeska in Alaska is hard to beat for those seeking an epic early-season adventure. With its long runs, breathtaking views, and reliable snow, Alyeska is often in great shape by December. 

The resort’s unique location means you’ll experience shorter days but some of the best early powder skiing in the country.

5. Crystal Mountain, Washington

If you can’t tell by now, the Pacific Northwest ski resorts are off to a great start this season! Crystal Mountain is another gem in the Pacific Northwest, known for its incredible views of Mount Rainier and wide-ranging terrain. 

Crystal has some excellent coverage already this season, making it a top choice for skiers and snowboarders. The resort’s high-speed gondola adds to its appeal, providing beautiful and fast rides up the mountain.

6. Copper Mountain, Colorado

Copper Mountain is opening more and more of its trails by December, offering a laid-back vibe, great skiing, and a close-knit feel. Its holiday activities and festive ambiance make it a fantastic choice for December skiing.

We just visited and skied here in November, and the vibe and terrain were incredible. I highly recommend visiting in December to experience the village, community, and views. 

7. Keystone, Colorado

Keystone is perfect for a family-friendly December ski trip. The resort boasts excellent snow, charming lodging options, and fun special holiday events for all ages.

With an expansive terrain and world-class amenities, Whistler Blackcomb is a December must. By now, the resort has built up solid snow coverage, making for excellent skiing conditions.ย 

Its holiday atmosphere, complete with festive events in Whistler Village, is a major draw for December visitors.

December is one of the best times to visit Vail. The European-inspired village sparkles with holiday lights, and the slopes are in great shape with diverse runs for every skill level.

It’s the perfect setting for a snowy holiday celebration and one of my favorite ski resorts to visit during Christmas and New Year’s holidays!

Jackson Hole is a December favorite for expert skiers and powder hounds. By now, the snowpack is solid, and the challenging terrain is ready to be explored. Plus, the town’s rustic holiday charm adds a special touch.

By December, Big Sky is essentially in full swing with excellent snow and its signature uncrowded slopes. Its breathtaking scenery and extensive terrain make it a great choice for a peaceful holiday ski trip.

Park City transforms into a winter wonderland in December. With charming streets, excellent skiing, and close proximity to Deer Valley, it’s a top destination for holiday trips.

With two village areas, countless accommodations, endless restaurants and shops, and phenomenal skiing, you can’t go wrong with an early-season visit here.

13. Alta, Utah

Plus, its location so close to Salt Lake City makes it super easy to fly into and explore the ski slopes.

The resort thrives this month with a lively atmosphere, and its high-altitude setting ensures great skiing conditions throughout the holiday season.

If you are looking for a big-name resort with a local vibe and plenty of holiday decorations, don’t hesitate to visit Breck! I always leave her with the best memories each time I visit.
