When March rolls around, many skiers and snowboarders feel a bit sad thinking the true winter season is over and spring is approaching. As the weather warms up and snowstorms become less frequent in parts of North America, it’s all about finding resorts that get late-season snow and still have most, if not all, of their runs open.
It might seem wild to some, but did you know that spring skiing is one of my favorite times to hit the slopes? You need to know which resorts to visit because if you go somewhere not known for spring skiing, trust me, you won’t be a fan.

In March, Telluride’s high elevation, with its base at 8,725 feet, helps maintain excellent snow conditions. Despite the spring season, the resort often gets late-season snowstorms, adding fresh powder to the slopes.
Plus, the longer daylight hours and milder temperatures make for enjoyable skiing sessions without all the extra layers.
One of my favorite things about Telluride is its stunning mountain views. You might think Colorado has great mountain views everywhere, but there’s something unique about Telluride and how close the town is to such towering peaks. Visiting in the spring is especially magical, as you can admire the snow-covered mountains while enjoying bright bluebird days with the sun shining. It’s a surreal experience.

Alta Ski Area is another terrific destination for spring skiing, just keep in mind that snowboarders aren’t allowed.
The resort is renowned for its magical spring skiing conditions, thanks to its high elevation and late-season snow. Alta sees an annual average of 546 inches of snowfall each year, which is mind-blowing! Many of their storms are scattered throughout the winter and spring, leaving excellent conditions for March skiers.
But one of my favorite aspects of Alta in the spring is the variety of outdoor patios and decks where you can bask in the sunshine and take in the views. Be sure to visit Alf’s Restaurant for a memorable time. I recommend trying their chili, and if you’re up for something sweet, don’t hesitate to get the hot chocolate!
3. Snowbird, Utah
Snowbird is another excellent choice for March skiing and a great alternative to Alta, especially if you’re a snowboarder or skiing with one.
Similar to many other resorts on this list, Snowbird is famous for its spring skiing conditions, thanks to its late-season snow and high elevation. Snowbird’s elevation ranges from 7,760 feet at its lowest point to 11,000 feet at its highest, ensuring that the snow sticks around for a while and that the resort receives plenty of snowfall in both the winter and the spring.
The spring season at Snowbird is often called “Snowbird Surf Season” because the conditions make you feel like you’re riding a wave, with smooth skiing and snowboarding experiences due to a mix of powder days and warm, sunny days.
4. Wolf Creek, Colorado
Wolf Creek is a hidden gem that draws less attention than larger resorts like Vail and Breckenridge, and that’s part of its charm.
What I love most about Wolf Creek is the local vibe and genuine passion people have for its slopes and community. Despite being lesser-known, Wolf Creek is one of the premier destinations worldwide for March skiing, which might surprise you if you’ve never heard of it.
The resort is relatively small compared to some, with 1,600 skiable acres of terrain. However, here’s where it gets remarkable: Wolf Creek’s elevation is insane. The base sits at 10,300 feet, and the summit reaches 11,904 feet! It’s incredible that both are over 10,000 feet high.
Plus, the resort receives an average of 430 inches of snowfall each year, with storms scattered throughout the winter and spring seasons. This makes it the ideal spot for spring skiing in an authentic, local setting.
5. Arapahoe Basin, Colorado
Due to its impressive summit elevation of 13,050 feet, Arapahoe Basin’s extended ski season continues into March, April, and sometimes beyond. Skiers can enjoy high-quality spring skiing conditions with soft snow and various terrain options. The resort’s relaxed atmosphere and lack of crowds make it perfect for sunny days on the slopes well into spring.
A-Basin is also a personal favorite of mine to explore in March. There’s nothing quite like spending spring days at The Beach, the front-row parking at A-Basin that turns into a grill-out zone and a fun place to mingle with fellow skiers. Between its frequent snowstorms, local charm, and clear bluebird days, it’s one of the best destinations to ski in Colorado late in the season. Plus, its convenient location close to Denver makes it easy for locals and visitors not wanting to drive too far from the city.
6. Grand Targhee, Wyoming
Grand Targhee Resort is a smaller Western resort, but unlike many others on this list, it’s in Wyoming! This resort is a hidden gem, which adds to its appeal as a fantastic local mountain.
With 2,602 skiable acres of terrain and an impressive average annual snowfall exceeding 500 inches, Grand Targhee offers a fabulous experience! The terrain includes 10% beginner, 70% intermediate, 15% advanced, and 5% expert, making it an excellent choice for intermediate skiers looking for a phenomenal place to ski in March.
7. Winter Park, Colorado
Winter Park is one of my favorite mountains. When my husband and I lived in Colorado, we spent many days there enjoying its incredible snow, local vibe, and spring skiing.
One thing I love about Winter Park is that it has two mountains: Winter Park and Mary Jane. Having two mountains makes the resort feel spacious and easy to navigate. My personal favorite area is Mary Jane because of its fantastic terrain.
Besides the dual mountain setup, Winter Park offers amazing March skiing with reliable snow and frequent snowstorms, thanks to its summit elevation of over 12,000 feet.
8. Mammoth Mountain, California
Mammoth Mountain is the go-to destination for the ultimate spring skiing experience in California. Located at 11,053 feet, Mammoth Mountain is home to California’s highest-summit ski resort. This high elevation guarantees reliable snow conditions extending well into March, with the resort frequently receiving late-season snowstorms from March through June.
Spring skiing at Mammoth offers sunny days and comfortable temperatures, making it a delightful skiing and snowboarding environment. The resort’s varied terrain, catering to beginners and experts alike, and terrain parks add to the thrill of March skiing at Mammoth.
After a day at Mammoth Mountain, there’s nothing better than returning to town to soak in the gorgeous scenery and pleasant spring temperatures. I recommend visiting Distant Brewing for their tasty craft beers. The brewery is also exceptionally dog-friendly, so your furry friend can join you on the patio if the weather is nice.

Mount Bachelor offers outstanding March skiing in the Pacific Northwest thanks to its deep snowpack and ongoing monthly snowfall. You can enjoy the soft powder and groomed runs, making it great for skiers of all levels to have a wonderful spring skiing experience.
I really like Mt. Bachelor for spring skiing because it gets plenty of snow in March, but the weather warms up for sunny runs in the afternoon. It’s common to see people skiing in T-shirts or even shorts during this time. You might think I’m joking, but I’m very serious! It’s lively, enjoyable, and entertaining, making it one of my go-to spring skiing destinations due to its fun-filled atmosphere.
The cherry on top is coming back to Bend after a day on the slopes and exploring the many breweries in the area. Some of my top choices for enjoying “apres ski” are Deschutes Brewery or Sunriver Brewing Company!
10. Copper Mountain, Colorado
While Copper Mountain isn’t exactly a hidden gem, it doesn’t always receive as much attention as Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail, and others. Nonetheless, Copper Mountain is an outstanding ski resort and one of the best to explore in March.
Copper Mountain boasts 2,538 skiable acres of terrain and receives an average annual snowfall of 305 inches. While these numbers may not seem as impressive as some other resorts on this list, Copper’s late-season snowstorms in March and its more local atmosphere sets Copper apart.
One of the things I love about Copper is its village area, which doesn’t feel as touristy as Vail. It’s a fantastic place to stay if you want to be close to the slopes and enjoy après-ski activities. I highly recommend checking out JJ’s Rocky Mountain Tavern for post-slope food or drinks!
11. Palisades Tahoe, California
Palisades Tahoe is famous for being the spring skiing capital of the world and is definitely one of the top March skiing spots due to its great conditions. Here, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the soft spring snow and longer daylight hours, perfect for exploring the resort’s iconic terrain and taking in the beautiful Sierra Nevada scenery.
The resort has a base elevation of 6,200 feet and a summit elevation of 9,050 feet, while the resort’s numbers may not be as massive as some of the resorts listed here, they’re still impressive. Plus, the resort reports an annual average of 400 inches of snow, with a monthly average of 91 inches in March and 67 inches in April. So, you can expect plenty of spring snowstorms to hit this area.
