Are you in search of the best time to ski Jackson Hole? You’re in the perfect place! Jackson Hole is one of my favorite destinations in the United States, offering some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world.

When planning a trip to such a legendary ski resort, you want to make sure you plan it at the perfect time. You need ideal conditions with plenty of snow, most runs open, and few crowds, and I know when that time is. Keep reading below as I highlight the best time to ski Jackson Hole for an epic ski adventure.

When Is The Best Time To Ski Jackson Hole?

The best time to ski at Jackson Hole is in January and February. Although the resort typically opens around Thanksgiving and sees significant snowfall in December, visiting in January or February ensures plenty of snowstorms have built up a solid base layer and opened all the runs.

December

If you live nearby or can take a few-hour road trip to Jackson, this could be a great time to go skiing. However, I wouldn’t recommend paying the high prices to fly into Jackson Hole Airport and ski during December due to the expensive flights, accommodations, and lift tickets during the holidays.

It’s also a bit early in the season for me to feel comfortable planning a major ski trip. While December often sees significant snowfall in Jackson, I prefer waiting until the runs are open. The resort has had time to work out any kinks, and the base layer is thicker.

If you’re planning to visit Jackson Hole in December, go later in the month when the base layer is more established, but keep in mind that means visiting around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. This period brings extra crowds and higher prices, but if you don’t mind, Jackson Hole is one of the most magical places on Earth, so go for it!

January

January is the perfect time to visit. Jackson Hole often gets good snow in December, with its runs opening early in the season.

By January, frequent snowstorms from the previous month had created a thick base layer, and January itself typically saw significant snowfall, resulting in more open runs and a continually growing base.

Additionally, the holiday season is over, so prices for lift tickets, accommodations, and flights will likely be more reasonable.

Avoid the slopes over New Year’s and MLK weekend if possible due to increased crowds. Otherwise, January is the perfect time to go skiing, whether you visit at the beginning, middle, or end of the month.

February

February is one of my favorite months to ski at almost any resort in the United States. By this time, most ski resorts have all their runs open, a great base layer, and frequent snowstorms, making Jackson Hole an excellent place to ski in February as well.

If you don’t like crowds, I’d suggest avoiding Presidents Day. However, I understand wanting to make the most of every PTO day, so it’s a good one to visit Jackson Hole. Just be aware that there might be some congestion on the slopes and longer lift lines.

March

March brings slightly warmer weather, and while Jackson Hole still gets snow, it isn’t as abundant as in December, January, and February. If you’re planning a trip in March, I recommend going early in the month for the best conditions.

April

April is when spring skiing truly takes off. In Jackson, snowstorms become less frequent, temperatures rise, and snow starts to melt.

While skiing in Jackson is still possible, and you might catch a magical powder day, I recommend going to a destination known for its April skiing, like Mount Bachelor in Oregon or Palisades Tahoe in California. This way, you’ll enjoy the best conditions without the risk of icy or slushy slopes in Jackson Hole.

If you’re searching for the best place to stay in Jackson Hole for skiing, I highly recommend The Lodge At Jackson Hole. My husband and I stayed there on our honeymoon and instantly fell in love with its rustic mountain charm, welcoming staff, and fantastic location right by the slopes.

It’s one of my favorite hotels, both for its sentimental value and its great amenities. Be sure to enjoy the rooftop hot tub and keep an eye out for moose! You might spot several right outside the lodge, like we did during our stay!
